The 10-Minute Check

Category: Artificial Intelligence / Digital Marketing
Publish Date: 2026-07-24
Picture someone looking for exactly the kind of product you sell. They pull out their phone, open ChatGPT and ask “what’s the best [thing you sell] for [the problem you solve]?” A few seconds later they’ve got three products or businesses to consider, including one from a competitor. Yours isn’t there. They never typed your name, never saw your site, never knew you were an option.
This is happening quietly, every day. OpenAI says hundreds of millions of people now use ChatGPT to find, understand and compare products. If your business doesn’t surface when they ask for recommendations, they may make their shortlist without you. Worst of all, you never see it: no bounce in your analytics, no abandoned cart, just a customer who went somewhere else.

You can run an initial check in about ten minutes. It’s worth doing because AI doesn’t judge your business from your sales page alone. It draws on what it can find across your website, product feeds and listings, and third-party sources such as reviews, directories and comparison articles. By the end of this post you’ll know:
– whether AI currently surfaces your business when a buyer asks
– which competitors and sources show up instead of you
– the most likely visibility gap to work on first

This is a simple, repeatable check you can run today and again once a month, so you can see whether your visibility is improving instead of guessing.

It won’t tell you the exact reason an AI picked one business over another, because nobody can see inside those systems with that kind of precision. What it will do is show you where you stand and point you at the gap that’s most worth fixing first.

Step 1: Ask the Way Your Buyers Actually Ask

Start by writing down the single most important question a real customer would ask, in plain everyday language, without mentioning your business by name. Not “is [my brand] any good,” but the kind of thing someone types when they don’t know you exist yet. Think “best budget standing desk for a small home office” or “where to buy organic dog treats made in the USA.”

Run that one question through all three tools: ChatGPT Search, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode. Use all three, because they don’t work the same way and they often name different businesses.

Use a fresh conversation in each tool, keep the wording identical, and record the date alongside your results. AI answers can vary between users and sessions, so treat each monthly test as a snapshot rather than a definitive ranking.

Comparing the answers will show you how much your visibility varies between tools. If you want a fuller picture, repeat the test with two more buyer questions once you’ve completed this initial check.

Step 2: Score Whether You Even Show Up

For each answer, put yourself in one of three buckets:

Named: the AI recommends you directly.

Mentioned: you come up in passing, but you’re not one of the headline picks.

Absent: you’re nowhere to be found.

Just as important, write down who does get named instead, and look for what those businesses have in common. Maybe they’ve all got stacks of reviews, maybe they turn up in the same “best of” article, maybe their product details are simply clearer and easier to pull. That pattern is your first clue about which signals may be helping competitors appear.

Step 3: Follow the Trail to the Sources That Influence the Answer

Now look at where the answers are coming from. Open any sources, product links, or citations the tool provides, and note the sites that keep showing up.

This works especially well in Perplexity, which deliberately lists its web sources. ChatGPT and Google won’t always hand you a tidy citation trail, so lean on the tools that do and treat what you find as a sample rather than the whole picture.

Record the sites that repeatedly influence the recommendations: review pages, forums like Reddit, directories, big retailers, comparison articles. These sources are contributing to the answers in your niche, which makes them useful places to investigate. Look at why those sources mention the competitors they do, and whether there’s a legitimate way for your business or content to earn a place there.

This works a little differently if you’re an affiliate. You usually want your content to be cited or clicked, not your “business” to be recommended, so run the same test on the kind of query your article targets.

You might find the AI is citing Reddit threads, manufacturer pages and major publications while ignoring your “best products” roundup. If that’s what you see, compare those sources with your own page. The missing ingredient may be original testing, first-hand evidence, genuine comparisons or a level of product expertise that makes the article more useful than another generic roundup.

Step 4: Identify the Signal You’re Missing

By now you can usually sort your visibility problem into one of three gaps. Find yours, then work on that one first.

A business-information gap. AI can’t clearly tell what you sell, who it’s for, where you operate, or whether your details are current, usually because that information is fuzzy or scattered across the web in inconsistent forms. The fix is straightforward:

Make your business clearly identifiable, with a plain description of what you sell and who it’s for.

Keep your name, description and contact details consistent everywhere they appear.

Complete the relevant business and platform profiles available to you, including a Google Business Profile if your business is eligible for one.

A product-data gap. Ecommerce sellers are especially exposed here. If your products, prices, availability or key attributes aren’t in a form these tools can crawl, you get left out of any comparison that depends on them. Picture a store owner whose products never appear in the test, then finds the key details locked inside images and the checkout flow instead of on clean, readable product pages. The fix is about getting your data into formats the platforms can read:

Put the important product details in plain text on the page, not buried in images.

Share a product feed so ChatGPT can represent your prices and availability accurately.

Use Merchant Center feeds and structured product data so Google can understand and verify your products.

A third-party credibility gap. Your own information is clear, but competitors keep appearing in reviews, roundups and trusted sources while you don’t. Think of a dropshipper who’s technically fine on their own site but rarely gets mentioned anywhere else. This one takes longer than the other two, so confirm it really is your main gap first, then:

Earn your first credible reviews on sites buyers and AI already reference.

Get included in relevant directories and “best of” lists.

Build mentions from the kinds of sources that already influence these answers.

Your Three Test Questions

Before you leave, open a note and finish these three lines with the exact questions your buyers would ask an AI, in their words rather than yours:

My buyer would ask AI: ___

They might also ask: ___

To compare options, they’d ask: ___

You now have one question for today’s ten-minute check and two more for a deeper comparison later.

Paste the first into ChatGPT Search before you get up from your desk, and within a minute you’ll know whether you’re in the answer or invisible.

“But What If…”

“What if AI isn’t really recommending businesses in my niche yet?”
It might not be today, but shopping and research habits are changing quickly. Many of the first steps are inexpensive, and almost everything on this list also makes your business easier for customers and search engines to understand, so the work is unlikely to be wasted even if AI recommendations are not yet common in your niche.

“What if I’m brand new, with no reviews or mentions to my name?”
That’s a normal starting point, not a dead end. You don’t need hundreds of mentions to begin. Begin by making your business clearly identifiable and your product information accessible and easy to read. Then earn one credible review or relevant reference, and build from there.

“Isn’t this just SEO with a new name?”
It overlaps heavily with SEO, and good SEO genuinely helps here. But the test looks beyond where your own page ranks. It also examines whether AI actually understands your business, which outside sources influence the answer, and whether competitors have stronger product, authority or third-party signals than you do.

For a long time, getting found online meant winning a place on a page of search results. That still matters, but it is no longer the only route buyers take. Increasingly, the first impression of your business may be formed before anyone visits your site, when an AI tool decides which options to include in its answer.

You can’t control exactly how these tools make that decision. You can make sure they have clear, accurate and well-supported information about your business to work with. Spend ten minutes finding out where you stand today. You may not be able to guarantee your place in the answer, but you can give your business a much better chance of earning it.

More buyers now ask AI for recommendations before they ever Google, and if your business doesn’t show up, you lose sales you never see.
