According to Whatnot’s 2026 State of Live Selling Report, beauty grew 791% in 2025, electronics grew 444% and jewelry grew 259%. Yet many sellers still think of Whatnot as the place for trading cards, sneakers and sports memorabilia.

That perception gap matters. It means some of the platform’s fastest-growing categories may still have far fewer sellers competing for attention than you’d expect. But rapid category growth doesn’t tell you whether there’s still room for another seller.

To find that out, you need to look inside the category.

By the end of this post you’ll have:

The three categories that grew fastest, and how to check whether any still have room for you

A repeatable check you can run in the app before spending a dime

A shortlist of items you already own that fit one

A realistic first-show target built from your own stock

The Three Categories Buyers Have Moved Into

Each of these three categories suits live selling for a practical reason, which matters more than the growth figure itself.

Beauty, up 791%. Makeup and skincare demo well on camera, weigh almost nothing to ship, and sit at price points that suit impulse bidding, without the sizing friction that makes clothing awkward live.

One caution: “Shop your house” doesn’t apply to cosmetics the way it applies to jewelry, because Whatnot’s Cosmetics Policy is strict:

Opened products are prohibited. The one exception is a product opened live for demonstration, and even then it cannot be swatched or used

Items must stay in their original container with the seal unbroken and not resealed, though the outer box can be gone

Excluding fragrances and nail polish, cosmetics must be less than three years old when listed

Nothing past its expiry or best-before date

So the beauty opportunity is unopened, current stock. Not the half-used drawer in the bathroom.

Electronics, up 444%. Cables, chargers, headphones and small accessories. Live suits this category because a thirty-second demo settles the does-it-work question that a product photo leaves open.

Jewelry, up 259%. Built for close-up camera work, weighs almost nothing to ship, and spans a wide enough range that one show can run from $15 costume pieces up to $150 items.

Also, Women’s fashion grew 223% over the same period, so it only just missed the top three.

The Demand Gap Check

Growth on its own isn’t an opportunity, because a category can grow fast and still be packed with sellers. What you want is how much attention is available per seller, and you can only see that inside the app.

On timing: steps 1 and 2 take about ten minutes and tell you whether a category deserves a closer look. Step 3 is the deeper pass and costs another half hour.

Step 1: Count how many sellers are live, not how fast the category is growing

Open the category in the app and count the shows running right now, then do the same in collectibles so you have something to compare against.

A short list of live shows inside a fast-growing category is the first signal worth investigating. If Step 2 shows that those sellers are attracting decent audiences, you may have found a category where attention is arriving faster than competition.

Step 2: Note the audience on each show, because that’s your attention-per-seller read

Write down the viewer count for the first ten live shows in the category, or all of them if there are fewer than ten.

Treat this as an audience-per-show indicator and nothing more, because viewers are an engagement signal and not necessarily buyers. Those first ten aren’t a random sample either, as the next step explains. The number also moves by time of day, so check it twice before you conclude anything.

Step 3: Watch 10 consecutive items and write down what sells

Pick a show, watch ten items in a row, and record how many of the ten sold and what each one closed at.

Then do it again in a second show, deliberately choosing one bigger and one smaller. Whatnot says shows in category feeds are ordered by historical popularity, based on recent channel activity, so the first show you open may be an established seller having a good night rather than a typical one. Ten items in one show is an anecdote. Ten items in two very different shows starts to be information.

Before you do the sums, set your minimum acceptable price per item, because that decides which of your stock is worth putting on camera at all.

Then take the realistic middle of those closing prices, multiply it by the number of items you plan to run, then multiply that by the percentage of watched items that sold. That gives you a rough gross-sales target, not take-home profit.

So if the middle closing price was $20, half the items you watched sold, and you have 12 items to run, your rough first-show target is $120. It may well come in lower for a brand-new seller without an established audience, but at least the number comes from the category you checked rather than from someone else’s screenshot.

Three Real-World Scenarios

These are illustrations of the check in use, not case studies with results attached.

Scenario one: the dropshipper with test units. He ran three product tests last year, two flopped, and the samples have sat in a closet since. Step 1 across beauty and electronics shows eleven sellers live in one and more than forty in the other, so he knows which category deserves the closer look first.

Scenario two: the store with slow movers. Twelve SKUs haven’t moved in four months. Steps 2 and 3 reveal two candidate categories with very different audience numbers and sell-through rates, so she picks the thinner-served one and clears in bundles rather than singles, staying above the price floor where fees bite.

Scenario three: starting with nothing bought. No store, no inventory. She spends one evening on Step 3, watching ten items in two different jewelry shows and noting closing prices, then spends the next evening walking around her own house with that list in hand.

Your 5-Minute Quick Win

Open a note on your phone and fill in these five lines. Leave the blanks you can’t answer yet, because the gaps tell you what to go and look at.

The category I’m checking is ___

Sellers live in it right now: ___

Audience on the biggest show / the smallest show: ___ / ___

Of the 10 items I watched, how many sold and at what prices: ___

Three things I already own that fit, and my minimum price for each: ___

Fill in that last line tonight and you’ve moved from reading about this to having a shortlist.

“But What If…”

“What if I have to wait around to get approved?”
Less of a barrier than most people assume, because Whatnot says most sellers unlock seller access within minutes. A few categories are gated and need extra approval, including luxury bags and accessories, sealed surprise sets in sneakers and streetwear, and wholesale, but beauty, electronics and jewelry aren’t generally on that list. Seller Status in the app shows where you stand.

“What if the fees eat my margin?”
For US sellers, the two main fees work differently, and the UK and EU structure isn’t the same. Commission is around 8% of the item price, but the 2.9% and $0.30 processing fee applies to the total order value the buyer pays, normally including shipping and tax. In Whatnot’s worked example, a $50 item pays $4 commission, the buyer’s total reaches $58.70, processing is about $2, and take-home is roughly $44. That flat 30 cents is why cheap singles lose proportionally more, so bundle up to a floor price.

“What if I hate being on camera?”
Fair, and it’s a common sticking point. Jewelry and beauty shows are largely hands and product rather than face, so you can run one without being the focus. It won’t feel comfortable at first, and that’s normal.

“What if shipping wipes out the profit?”
The timing helps. Starting today, Whatnot makes USPS Ground Advantage the default, and rates on 1 to 5 lb Ground Advantage packages are expected to drop by nearly 20%, which could particularly help bundled beauty lots and heavier small-electronics orders. Flat Rate remains available at a temporary rate of $12.99 through November 1, with Whatnot covering part of the cost, though Ground Advantage in that weight band is around 40% cheaper and allows larger package dimensions.

One warning worth reading twice, because it costs real money. Priority Mail and Flat Rate packaging can’t be used with Ground Advantage labels, and Whatnot says doing it may get your package returned plus a USPS fee of roughly $20 charged to your account.

So if you’ve got old Priority Mail boxes on the shelf, don’t reach for them on your first show. If you use Flat Rate packaging or regularly ship over 5 lb, review your shipping settings before you go live.

The category everyone is talking about is, by definition, the category everyone is already selling in. Growth figures travel fast, and by the time a number like 791% has been quoted in a dozen newsletters, plenty of people have seen it. What doesn’t travel is how many sellers are live in that category at nine o’clock on a Tuesday night in your timezone, because nobody publishes that.

So go and look for yourself. The number worth checking isn’t how fast a category grew last year. It’s how few people are live in it when the buyers show up.

What if you’re sitting on unsold stock that belongs in one of Whatnot’s fastest-growing categories?
