The 5% of your budget worth “wasting”

Welcome back to this week’s Side Income Roundup, Monday, October 19.

This week is about small moves that pay off later: a surprise gift that earns referrals, free tools to run every channel, and two deadlines heading your way before the holidays.

🎁 The 5% of budget worth spending “foolishly”
🛒 Run Amazon, eBay and Shopify from one dashboard, free
🎬 Hire creators for product videos without an agency
⏰ Two deadlines to catch before the holidays
🤖 TikTok’s new one-click checkout and AI assistant

Let’s get into it.

THIS WEEK’S BIG IDEA

🎁 The best marketing money is the 5% you spend “foolishly”

More ad spend has a ceiling. A smaller slice spent on an unexpected gesture to an existing customer buys something ads can’t: a story people tell. When the pet retailer Chewy sent flowers to a grieving pet owner, the post drew 681,000 likes and a wave of customers vouching for the brand, free.

A three-year study of around 10,000 customers found referred buyers were at least 16% more valuable and 18% less likely to leave, an edge that never faded.

Our Take: * Send one recent customer a small unexpected gift this week, a note or a freebie. Surprised buyers talk, and the ones they refer stick around.*

TOOLS OF THE WEEK

🛒 Amazon adds multichannel selling to Seller Central
Manage your listings, orders and profit across Amazon, eBay, Shopify and Walmart from one Seller Central dashboard. Edit a product once and it updates everywhere, free as it reaches US sellers.

🎬 Nexa opens a creator marketplace
Browse UGC creators and influencers with their rates shown upfront and hire them directly, so you can line up product videos without an agency or a pile of DMs.

Our Take: * On more than one channel? Switch on Seller Central’s multichannel tools this week and run every marketplace from a single dashboard.*

TODAY’S QUICK WINS

📢 Meta turns “product browsing” on by default October 28
Meta is switching its product browsing enhancement on for ads you already have running from October 28, a month before Black Friday. It’s opt-out only, so if you run a product catalog, decide for yourself before Meta decides for you.

🎁 eBay’s gift-card ban reaches US sellers November 16
eBay is banning gift-card sales, digital and physical, including empty collectible cards. US sellers have 30 days from the notice to clear affected listings before it takes effect on November 16.

Our Take: * Open Meta’s ad settings before October 28, and if you list gift cards on eBay, pull them before November 16.*

📝 The Holiday Money Calendar: One Prompt That Plans Your Entire Q4

This post hands you a single AI prompt that maps your whole Q4 in one sitting, and flags the early date most sellers miss.

Our Take: * Block an hour this week to map your Q4 dates in one pass. A plan now beats scrambling email by email in November.*

AI SPOTLIGHT

🤖 TikTok adds one-click checkout and an AI shopping assistant

TikTok launched Buy Direct, a one-click checkout built into the feed, alongside an AI assistant that answers product, sizing and shipping questions inside the app. It’s rolling out in the US through partners like Shopify and Stripe, and it only answers as well as your product data allows.

Our Take: * Selling on TikTok? Tighten your product titles, sizing and shipping details now, because the new AI assistant answers buyers straight from them.*

UNTIL NEXT WEEK…

Here’s your short list this week:

🎁 Send one customer a small surprise
🛒 Run your channels from one dashboard
⏰ Check the Meta and eBay deadlines that apply to you
🤖 Tidy your product data before TikTok’s assistant goes live

Most of these take minutes, and the two deadlines are the ones that cost you if you wait.

Talk soon,
Aidan

P.S. Next Monday, a simple way to turn one holiday buyer into two before the season even peaks.
